Aleks is in the final year of his studies at the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG), majoring in Computer Science and Information Systems. Just like the majority of his colleagues, he went for an internship program over the past summer. We asked Aleks a few questions about his experience with Resolute Software and the projects he was involved in. He tells us a bit more about how he got into programming in the first place and his plans for the future.

“I really enjoyed the start-up culture and the idea of a close-knitted working environment. When you see that your work is valued, you feel invited to tap into the knowledge that the team shares with you, and this empowers you to suggest solutions.”
What made you passionate about programming?
I got interested in programming when I was in fourth grade, that is when it all started, with my first ever web page. I had my doubts about whether a software engineer is the right career for me while I was in high school, nonetheless, I continued working towards it. It was when I got into the university that I got passionate about pursuing a programming career. I think the side projects that I do for the AUBG student clubs like The Hub and TEDx made me love it. These clubs are a key part of me and have helped me grow over the years, both personally and professionally.
The fact that I have spent endless hours working and not getting tired, moreover enjoying it, was the key motivation. It was also the time that I learned how to utilize the knowledge I have acquired.
Why did you sacrifice your summer holiday for an internship?
Honestly, I do not remember having a free summer for the last six or seven years! Ever since I started preparing for TOEFL in 8th grade up until the university years with the internships, I had rarely had a break. I was not prepared for the enormous amount of opportunities the industry has to offer, that is why I decided to stick with my studies, explore and learn the different technologies that I am interested in and try as many intern positions as I possibly can.
It is important to be in a competitive environment so you can push yourself and strive to go further.
How were you selected for an internship with Resolute Software?
I met Veli (CTO, Resolute Software) and Hristo (CEO, Resolute Software) on the job fair that AUBG organizes. At the time, Resolute was starting to take off. The one thing that stays to this day is how Veli asked me all the technical questions on the spot. Since the very beginning, they acted as we have known each other for years, being friendly, direct and straight to the point. When the selection process started, I had my doubts; I can not lie. It was a week-long series of technical interviews, and personality tests. As it turned out, it was for the best because if you pass all these things, you sure are a great fit and will be happy with the team.
Did any other companies approach you for an internship?
Yes. In fact, there were three.
Why did you choose Resolute Software?
I enjoy the start-up culture and the idea of working in a close-knitted working environment. That, combined with the experienced team that is behind Resolute, really influenced my decision. Of course, after I met Veli and Hristo, I went around and asked the professors about them (both of them are AUBG alumni). Every single one of them told me that they are hardworking and ambitious people, and I got the same impression from peers.
Resolute’s leadership is exceptional, the internship position, too. Angular front-end developer with the opportunity of going full-stack? How could have I refused such an offer?
Did the internship meet your expectations? What are your best takeaways from the past summer?
The internship went way beyond my expectations! I was able to work on projects with real customers, which was a great responsibility. Still, it got into doing my job and progress with learning. The teamwork and programming went hand by hand.
Any fun projects that you worked on during your internship?
I took part in a big project that is soon to be launched. Since I was mainly responsible for the front-end part, I really got to research in advance Angular topics and further enhance my skills in the technology. My close collaboration with Chris (a teammate software engineer) allowed me to experience .NET Core in practice.
The whole concept of handling a project from start to finish was new to me, and it felt like a huge responsibility. That is what probably made it so enjoyable.
What did you like most about your internship?
I have a lot of favorite things, but I would say the team was the top one. I know I am at my best when I feel that my work is valued, and I can openly express my opinion, suggest solutions, and discuss scenarios. The work atmosphere was very positive, helping me gain knowledge, real-world experience, and confidence. There is not a single person in the office that has ever refused to help with advice or example. I could proudly say that by the end of my internship, I was eligible to answer technical questions.
Now you are back to university for your last year of studies. Are you still working remotely for Resolute Software? How does this feel?
I promised myself never to work and study at the same time because when I do something, I do only that one thing so it could be perfect. However, at the end of the last semester, before the summer internship, I scheduled all my classes in a way that could allow me for remote work as well. Yes, I am still working for Resolute. As it turned out, I did find a remote job, and it is looking better than ever. I have time to finish all my studies and work of the company without neglecting anything.
What is next for you?
The plans for the near future are bright, Resolute Software, and a master program. Whether I would go for masters first and then back to work or vice versa is not of importance to me, as I will be learning at a fast pace either way!
